Leaving green footprints
Purpose
Climate adaptation, energy efficiency, sustainable development and green growth are societal challenges for which the Facilities Management (FM) profession can develop solutions and make positive contributions on the organisational level and with societal-level effects. To base the emerging sub-discipline of sustainable facilities management (SFM) on research, an overview of current studies is needed. The purpose of this literature review is to provide exactly this overview.
Energy Management
MAB is assisting in the creation of net-zero energy buildings, by becoming involved early in the design of infrastructure, as well as through deploying innovative solutions that transform the energy utilization of existing building stock. Replacing legacy management software and installing smart meters, CAFM timers and motion sensors can now enable unprecedented energy management.
Integrated data-driven management
Breakthroughs in cognitive technologies such as AI, IoT and ML are paving the way for integrated and data-driven FM. The resulting insight-led operations reconcile customer centric facilities with reduced inefficiencies, downtime and greenhouse gas emissions. Innovative use of RFID and related technologies allows for real time monitoring of built environments and associated automation and workforces, to optimize resource utilization.
Integrated data-driven management
Recycling and waste management are a crucial aspect of sustainable practices. Facility managers can make massive impact by recycling plastic, fertilizing landscaped areas using composted waste, and even the deployment of waste-to-energy projects, where appropriate.
De-carbonization
Mechanized assets in buildings result in the emission of copious amounts of greenhouse gases. Digital retrofits are one way for Facilities Managers to increase the energy efficiency of this infrastructure. Since early 2017, Al Fajer has been taking a series of steps, which target the reduction of our environmental footprint by 20%.
Eco-friendly cleaning
MAB implements Innovative practices such as using de-ionized water, steam cleaning and robotics hold great promise in ensuring high standards of hygiene, which are achieved using green practices like nano technology & bio – mimicking.
Thinking Green
Like our safety certification, our accreditation to ISO 14001 forms the foundation of our environmental posture. This includes using energy-efficient engineering and cleaning
equipment, renewable energy wherever possible, and minimising the use of natural resources such as water and fossil fuels.
In the latter case we are one of the first Facilities Managers in the region to introduce hybrid alternatives into our equipment fleet.
We believe we have an ethical responsibility to raise environmental awareness and share the knowledge we gain. This is why we are proactive in making recommendations on alternative and renewable energy methods to our clients and industry associates.
Sustaining Tomorrow
Sustainability can mean different things – financial, operational or environmental. We provide applications that are sustainable in all respects – whether it be the conservation of energy or natural resources, expanding the lifecycle of
your asset, replacing existing components with more efficient alternatives or implementing cost- saving practices. Our sustainability policy is not restricted to our international accreditation in ISO 50001 (Energy Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management).
We further extend our practices by advising on adjustments to building design to make FM more cost efficient. We maintain alliances with some of the industry’s most accomplished energy management and sustainability authorities to
provide the latest advancements to our clients.
We also create sustainability by optimizing our own processes and through best practice – continuously building our own knowledge base and changing mindsets within business and the community. Within MAB, we have incentive program that reward environmental and sustainable practices.
